Naval Air Station Whidbey Island is home to Ault Field and the Seaplane Base. There are 19 active duty squadrons currently based at NAS Whidbey Island, and the air station maintains a Search and Rescue unit, flying three Sikorsky MH-60S Nighthawks. Over 50 tenant commands are also located on the Island which provide training, medical and dental, and support services for Whidbey’s staff and Marine Corps personnel. Naval Air Station Whidbey Island is located in Oak Harbor, Washington. Military personnel looking for on-post housing need to contact the Navy Housing Office within 30 days of arrival at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. The Department of Defense Public Private Venture initiative provides privatized housing with over 1700 housing units available on post. Average wait times are based on the number of bedrooms requested as well as an individual’s rank. Candidates will need to check in with the housing office to complete a housing application within 30 days of arrival. Off-post housing is also available, and the housing office can help with applicable BAH rates as well as listing of available properties.
Temporary lodging is available in the Navy Gateway Inns and Suites, the Navy Lodge and local hotels. A maximum of 10 days for temporary lodging is allowed on post. The Navy Lodge Whidbey Island provides over 50 units to accommodate families and is within walking distance to the Navy Exchange, Commissary and downtown Oak Harbor. To make reservations at the Navy Lodge, call 360-257-2529, and for the Navy Gateway Inns, call 1-800-NAVY-INN. Pet rooms are limited, so call in advance to check on accommodations. The major school districts serving Naval Air Station Whidbey Island include the districts of Coupeville, Oak Harbor, and Anacortes. Local communities offer public and home-schooling options. For further information on specific school districts, contact the School Liaison Officer by calling 360-257-6863. Home based instruction is also available parents submit a Declaration of Intent within two weeks of any public school quarter.
